IPDS EXAM VIDEOS
Sample IPDS Exam Video by Ory Shihor
Instructions and FAQs
What is an IPDS exam video?
IPDS stands for Identify a Problem & Demonstrate a Solution.
An IPDS exam video is a video in which the teacher:
presents a technical and/or musical problem of their choice
identifies a solution to the problem
demonstrates how to resolve it
What are the steps to create an IPDS exam video?
Step 1:
Identify and demonstrate your chosen problem by playing it. Your playing does not have to be perfected - it can be played under tempo, in separate hands and in short segments. It is only used to identify the problem in more than just words. This is not a performance exam! Focus on a technical or musical issue, or a mixture of both (which is sometimes the case). If you encounter more than one problem within a section, please include it in the same IPDS, unless you feel that it is unrelated.
Step 2:
Demonstrate and explain how you would solve the identified problem(s).
Step 3:
Submit your videos along with a PDF of the IPDS score segments, annotated as needed. Please note the bulk of the explanation should be done verbally. (see my example in the video).
How do I identify a problem in a piece?
The problem(s) might rise to the surface while you teach or play a particular piece, or, if you have not taught the piece, try to imagine teaching it to one of your current students. What problem(s) might this student face in the piece and how would you advise her to overcome these problem(s)? The problem(s) may occur in a single bar, over several bars or within an entire section.
How many videos do I need to submit for the IPDS Exam?
4 videos.
How long is each video?
Up to 10 minutes.
How many problems should be included in one IPDS?
One problem. However, there can be more if the problems are related.
How many IPDS should be included for each video?
Each IPDS should be presented in a separate video and can include several solutions. If you encounter more than one problem within a section and would like to address it as well, please include it in the same IPDS video, unless you feel that it’s unrelated to your original problem.
How many pieces should be used as the source for the IPDSs?
A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 pieces.
Should all IPDS pieces be from the OSI curriculum?
Yes. However, substitution pieces are allowed with pre-approval by Ory Shihor.
Do I get to retake the IPDS exam if I don’t pass the first time?
Yes, you have 60 days to retake any sections of the IPDS exam once without the need to reapply.
What are the video requirements?
There are no specific technical requirements - just be certain that the sound and picture quality are clear and that the camera is not positioned too far away from the keys. Including your face in the video is optional, as long as your voice is heard clearly.
When will the candidates receive their IPDS Exam result?
You will receive the result within 30 days of submission.
